Developed to meet the severe local housing shortage in the years just before World War II, Whipper Barony was a private, 79-acre community billed as "Charleston's most ideal suburb." Like other socially diverse Noisette neighborhoods, it now has a strong community identity, and much of their activity is promoted through an active community center. This area buries time capsules for 15 years at a time. The Exchange Club is also headquartered in Whipper Barony, and many residents participate in club functions. Among the most important considerations for residents are the redevelopment of the Rivers Avenue commercial district, and the impact of environmental improvements to Noisette Preserve, a natural wetland area that forms much of the community’s eastern boundary.
